VisIt is an Open Source, interactive, scalable, visualization, animation and analysis tool. The original inventors of Visit were the Department of Energy and Advanced Simulation and Computing Initiative, and their primary purpose was to display and analyze terascale simulations results. It was created with a high level of modularity to support a fast deployment of the new visualization technology including a plug-in architecture, data operators, plots and multiple user interfaces.
The visit technology has allowed the visualization of smaller scale data from simulations on the desktop systems. The visit is defined as an open source interactive, flexible, visualization, animation as well as an analysis tool. It employs parallel visualization and graphical analysis tool for information construed on both the 2D and 3D meshes.
It allows users to generate visualizations and animations and save their creations as images or animations for presentations. It goes beyond simple pictures; its infrastructure is designed for paralleled and post-processing of massive data sets. The latest version of the visit is a bug-fix release which solves issues arising from using the software.
Visit runs on various platforms from PCs running windows or Linux all the way up to the supercomputers running AIX. Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Linux, MacOS and AIX 5.3 are the operating systems supported by this app. For the app to work well on these platforms, You should have at least 1 gigabyte (GB) of memory for your system. The actual amount of memory you will need depends on the size of the dataset you will be visualizing, but having plenty of memory will ensure that you don't suffer large performance degradations.
