Flare is a library of ActionScripts that support the creation of interactive visual representations of data created by UC Berkeley Visualization Lab. The "prefuse" was a precursor to Flare, and it was specific for Java.

Flare's toolkit allows you to build visual data presentations from the basic chart to complex layers, maps and dependency representations. Its best feature yet is that it allows for customization of techniques to be used in creating the visual presentations while also allowing users to freely deploy and modify the software as it is BSD-Licensed open-source software.

Flare has been applied by many prominent companies and applications including IBM Visual Communication Lab to support Many-Eyes, The Minnesota Employment Explorer, The Good Guide Political Contributions App, Mem Tracker, Wired Italia, Slate Magazines, ABC News’ Good Morning America and BBC News.

These companies have used flare to present data from citations, political reports, employment trends, mapping Top sites, trending online discussions and as an interactive visual component of their publications . Flare’s most recent release is flare 2009.01.24 with a version under development in GitHub which allows for better use with Flash Player 10 along with other updates and fixes. Meanwhile, for any assistance flare has a tutorial posted online and an online forum for users.
