GNU Octave represents a high level language intended for numerical computations. Because of its command line interface, users can solve linear and nonlinear problems numerically and perform other numerical experiments through a language that is mostly compatible with Matlab.
This software has features such as powerful mathematics-oriented syntax with built-in plotting and visualization tools, it is free software which runs on GNU/Linux, macOS, BSD, and Windows, compatible with many Matlab scripts.
A syntax which is largely compatible with Matlab is the Octave syntax. It can be run in several ways - in GUI mode, as a console, or invoked as part of a shell script. Thanks to it, users can solve systems of equations with linear algebra operations on vectors and matrices and data can be visualized in 2D and 3D with high level plot commands.
Octave Forge represents a central location for development of packages for GNU Octave. Octave software is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and it’s free. It also has extensive tools for solving common numerical linear algebra problems, finding the roots of nonlinear equations, integrating ordinary functions etc.
Because of its user-defined functions written in Octave’s own language, it is easily extensible and customizable. This software is freely redistributable which means that users can redistribute it or modify it under the terms of the GNU General Public License. Main goal of this software is helping users to solve realistic problems or using it in other fields such as teaching, research, and commercial applications.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION GNU Octave is a Scientific Programming Language mathematics-oriented syntax with built-in plotting and visualization tools and is is licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). The software operates using GNU/Linux, macOS, BSD, and Windows. The Octave syntax is compatible with numerous Matlab scripts and can be run in GUI mode, as a console, or applied as part of a shell script. GNU Octave is designed to solve systems of equations with linear algebra operations on vectors and matrices as well as visualize data with high-level plot commands in 2D and 3D. Systems are provided by the individual distributions known to package Octave including Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Gentoo, and openSUSE. Octave has built-in functions for solving nonlinear differential equations and has the ability to integrate equations. Documentation is available in printed form and through Octave prompt with both being created from the same input file. Octave Forge is a central platform where packages are developed for GNU Octave, comparable to Matlab’s toolboxes.
