Zim is a graphical text editor used to maintain a collection of wiki pages. Each page contains links to other pages, simple formatting, and images. With Zim, creating a new page is very easy as linking to nonexistent pages are stored in a folder like structure in an outliner and can have attachments.

With wiki formatting, all data is stored in plain text files. Various plugins provide additional functionality like a task list manager, equation editor, tray icon and support for version. With Zim, you are in a position to; organize task list, brainstorm, take notes during lectures or meetings, keep an archive of notes, and draft blog entries and emails.

Zim can handle several types of markup such as; headings, bullet lists and out rightly bold, italics and highlighted. With an autosave feature, you can switch between pages and follow links while editing without worries. The markup is saved as wiki text so you can easily edit it with other editors.

Although Zim now exists for over 3 years there is no "1.0" version yet. This does not mean that the application is particularly unstable or only usable for Linux gurus. But it does mean that the feature set is not yet complete (of course everything described in the manual is implemented). Zim also supports external links. With Zim, you can also list because it supports list and also checkbox lists. Well, you can describe Zim as a simple text editor but with inline formatting but also has minimal GUI elements.
