VisTrails is a combination of both workflow and visualization systems which manages and provides data and process management support for exploratory computational tasks, allows the combination of loosely-coupled resources, specialized libraries, and grid and Web services and provides a mechanism for parameter exploration and comparison of different results.
Vistrails offers features such as flexible provenance architecture, querying and re-using history, support for collaborative exploration, creating and modifying workflows, groups and sub-workflows, interacting, merging and querying version trees, VisTrails spreadsheet, tabular data package, using analogies to update workflows, parameter exploration, provenance browser, mashups, parameter widgets, control flow assistant, list handling, streaming, parallel flow, embedding files via LatexA, connecting to a database and VisIt and ParaView plugin.
VisTrails’ comprehensive provenance infrastructure maintains detailed history information about the steps followed in the course of an exploratory task which leverages this information to provide novel operations and user interfaces that streamline this process. VisTrails can optionally track run-time information about the execution of workflows like who executed a module, on which machine and the elapsed time.
VisTrails provides flexible and intuitive query interfaces where users can explore and reuse provenance information and formulate simple keyword-based and selection queries as well as structured queries. VisTrails can be configured with a database backend that can be used as a shared repository where it provides a synchronization facility that allows multiple users to collaborate asynchronously and in a disconnected fashion which users can check in and check out changes like a version control system. VisTrails supports VTK, Image Magick, Web Services, and pylab.
