The Master of Science in Project Management (MPM) degree program offered by the School of Business at Virginia International University provides students with the technical and operational skills necessary to excel in leadership positions as project managers. The School is an Educational Member of the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), and has affirmed its commitment to excellence in business education. Courses in the MPM program emphasize project progressive elaboration strategies as well as application theory used to monitor and control all that pertains to a project with the ultimate goal of achieving project objectives on-time and within budget.
The MPM program consists of twelve courses, excluding prerequisite courses, which make up a total of 36 credit hours. Applicants seeking admission into the MPM program who have no previous business and project management experience are required to take the MPM prerequisites. For the course of the program, students are required to take four general management core courses, which provide students with the skills and knowledge that all project managers need including accounting, finance, organizational behavior, marketing, and leadership. They also take six required Project Management core courses, which offer students the familiarity and skills in managing projects, evaluating risks, handling contractual and procurement activities, and analyzing advanced projects. Also included in the program’s curriculum are two thesis courses which will help them demonstrate their ability to integrate people, processes, and technology, as they prepare to become practical hands-on project managers. If desired, graduates can take an additional course aimed at preparing them for professional certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP). Graduates of this program will be well-versed in decision making processes, ethics, communication, globalization, and analytical frameworks.
