The Smith School has been recognized for transforming its curriculum to reflect the changing needs of an increasingly dynamic and competitive marketplace. Students get to learn in small class sizes in a tight-knit community that encourages collaboration and teamwork. Smith’s established faculty focuses on creating new knowledge and delivering valuable insights to students. Basically, they give you the tools and frameworks you need to turn data into insights, and the leadership skills to turn insights into action. Members of the faculty are contracted as consultants by large financial institutions, multinational corporations and government agencies. The first year core curriculum focuses on functional-area knowledge that readies you for the summer internship. In the second year, you select career tracks that deliver the right mix of electives which empower you to build deep expertise in your chosen profession and position you for success. You can leverage the faculty’s industry expertise and brainpower to build a course schedule that fits your specific interests and career goals. Career tracks offered at the Smith school include General Management/Consulting, Finance, Marketing, and Operation/Supply chain/Logistics. The school also supports dual degree programs that allow you to combine your MBA studies with graduate coursework in other University of Maryland degree programs to create a unique set of skills and knowledge. The capstone project at the end of the program will give you an opportunity to apply what you learn in the classroom to real-world challenges. There are other Smith’s unique experiential learning opportunities that provide students with hands-on experiences aligned with their Career Tracks. MBA students get to participate in a global consulting opportunity, a leadership development program, a faculty-led global experience or a semester-long exchange program.
