Pencil is flowchart software designed for provision of open source and free prototyping tool that enables people to easily install and use it for creating of mockups in known desktop platforms. The key features provided by Pencil are; GUI prototyping, built-in share collections, diagram drawing support, exportation of outputs to different formats, easy location of Cliparts from the internet, and linking of inter-page. The inter-page linking feature enables drawing of elements and linking them to specific pages in the same document.

The inter-page linking feature also provides an excellent platform for defining the flow of UI when creating website mockups and application. Linking of pages enables defining of documents converted into HTML hyperlinks when exportation of documents into web format takes place. Through the inter-page linking, users can view the interactive version through the simulated flow after clicking on the UI elements.

Pencil provides a clipart browser tool that enables users to easily locate cliparts by keywords and add them to their drawings through a simple drag and drop operation. Pencil provides the clipart tools in a vector format to enable users to scale appropriate sizes. Pencil enables exportation of multiple output formats such as allowing users to have their drawings exported as web pages or a set of rasterized PNG files that can be delivered to the viewers. Pencil also facilitates the exportation of documents into known formats such an Adobe PDF, Linkscape SVG, OpenOffice, and text documents.

Pencil provides the diagram drawing support feature that enables the use of wire shapes in diagrams by supporting connectors. The diagram drawing support feature provided by Pencil also provides a series of flowchart shapes that are also present for drawing diagrams. Pencil enables easy GUI prototyping by providing multiple built-in shapes collection for drawing several types of user interface starting from mobile platforms to the desktop. Pencil provides iOS and UI stencils that enable users to begin prototyping apps by use of simple installation.
