OsCommerce, short for "open source Commerce," is an e-commerce and online store-management software program. Any web server that has PHP and MySQL installed in it can make use of this software. It is available as free software under the GNU General Public License.
One of the versions of this software program, osCommerce Online Merchant v2.3, is a complete self-hosted online store solution and it contains both a catalog frontend and an administration tool backend which can be easily installed and configured through a web-based installation procedure. There are currently two releases of OsCommerce. Versions 2.3, which is stable; and 3.0, which is in development.
They are developed as two independent programs, and as such do not share code. Contributions, the official name for the open-source community developed plugins, are developed for either 2.x or 3.0, and are incompatible with one another. OsCommerce partners with experts around the world with the main objective of providing the best services to customers.
With the help of things like code development, template designers, and hosting providers, OsCommerse partners cover all the major business transactions and deal customers have to make from time to time. The present iteration of OsCommerce is version 3.x, which is a major re-write of the program for incorporation of an object-oriented backend, a template system which allows layout changes easily and includes an administration-area username and password definition during installation. The tools, features, user-friendly interface and full responsiveness ensure easy navigation and configuration on site, without much special coding skills required.
