OpenEMIS Core is a customizable web application that supports the day-to-day activities involved in managing a sector wide education system. OpenEMIS initially developed by UNESCO, is an Open Source information system devised to collect data on schools, students, teachers and staff. The key features are a royalty-free program with open source, customizable system to meet specific education needs and requirements with multiple language support.
The software runs offline on a desktop computer, on a local network, or as a cloud-based application and can be accessed via smart phones and tablets. OpenEMIS has the ability to integrate a number of data sources external to the education system, such as census data through data collection, data management and data analysis. The tool automatically calculates and aggregates standard education indicators and intends to strengthen statistical data which is easily adaptable to the needs of producers and users of education information.
OpenEMIS offers cross-browser compatibility available as a web application that can be configured on a local network and is hosted on web and cloud based servers. The software has been tested to be compatible with web browsers including Internet Explorer (version 9 and above), Firefox, Chrome and Safari. The system generates reports in various file formats on Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat and Google Earth allowing users to visualize, analyze and identify differences and gaps using tables, graphs and maps.
