NodeXL is a graphic application of networks. NodeXL comes in two packages; basic and pro. Basic is free, and the NodeXL application is available for Microsoft® Excel® 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016 which makes exploration of network graphs easy.
NodeXL pro, on the other hand, extends features of the basic NodeXL and provides additional features such as access to social media network data streams, text analysis as well as sentiment analysis and advanced network metrics.
Both the basic and pro-NodeXL features Graph Metric Calculations, the only difference is that the pro can calculate the degree of centrality, PageRank, clustering coefficient as well as graphic density.
The application also allows flexible importation and exportation of graphs in the form of GraphML, Pajek, UCINet as well as the matrix. With this app, the user can import network data from Twitter. Importation of network data from other social platforms such as facebook, youtube among others requires the user to use the pro version of NodeXL.
What makes the import feature more interesting, the app is zoom and scale enabled, such that one can only zoom the desired areas and reduce clutter by scaling the vertices of the graph.
The app features a flexible layout as well enabling the user to lay out the graph in the desired direction. Vertices or edges can be hidden using sliders, and unwanted components of the graph can be moved enabling the user to focus on the important matters.
NodeXL automates graphic tasks and allows the grouping of vertices as well as making them distinguishable by either shapes or colors. The webpage of NodeXL is easily navigated enabling new users both the access and comprehension of the app before purchasing the product.
