MayaVi is a data visualizer with two generations, MayaVi1 and MayaVi2. MayaVi1 was the original generation which is a free, easy to use scientific data visualizer written in Python and uses the Visualization toolkit for graphics.
MayaVi features include an easy to use GUI written using Tkinter.MayaVi2 is a rewrite of mayaVi. MayaVi data visualizer provides models to visualize computational grids scalar, vector, and tensor data. MayaVi can also be imported as a Python module from other Python programs and scripted from the python interpreter.
It visualizes data using texture and raycast mappers and supports any VTK dataset using VTK data format. It has a modular design enabling the user to add their modules and filters while supporting the importation of a simple 3D Studio Scene or VRML. However texturing in VRML is not yet supported. MayaVi also has a look up table to customize lookups for easy data visualization. It is also possible to save visualized data for future use.
Maya Vi has two packages for 3D visualization which include Mayavi and TVTK. Mayavi is a tool for easy and interactive data visualization entailing seamless integration with scientific Python libraries. TVTK, on the other hand, is a trait-based wrapper for visualization with an open source visualization library. TVTK manipulates visualization objects while MayaVi allows the user to operate their data to see the results.
Mayavi is reusable and can be embedded in other applications to assemble domain specific tools. TVTK is mostly used to write MayaVi models which are later used to interact with visualizations or create applications. It also has a light manipulative kit that allows the user to modify the visualization light.
