Google Prediction API provides pattern-matching and machine learning capabilities. After it learns from your training data, Prediction API can predict a numeric value or choose a category that describes a new piece of data. With these capabilities, you can create applications to perform tasks such as predicting what movies or products a user might like, categorizing emails as spam or non-spam, assessing whether posted comments have positive or negative sentiment etc.
