Asterisk is an innovative, open-source framework designed by Digium for developers looking to create ground-breaking video, voice, and text solutions for small, medium, and large organizations.
It’s a widely adopted tool that converts an ordinary computer into a powerful server to drive the next generation communication deployment. The software includes multiple pre-built constituents that handle the low-level as well as the intricate details of video, voice, and SMS communications. It powers many services and applications including conference bridges, automatic call distributions, unified communications, voice mail, and more.
Asterisk runs using the business internet connection thereby eliminating the need for the legacy landline systems. It also exhibits a high level of flexibility and provides an impressive set of features which include SMS messaging, communication management, call routing, call transfer, caller ID, call monitoring, voice mail, computer telephony, and caller detail records. The use of Asterisk as the core engine for numerous business communication applications can be attributed to its multiple benefits.
Although, there are many IP PBX in the modern era, only a few provide components that support a wide range of business functions, as Asterisk does. The platform adopts a modular design which makes it easy to combine dailplan script, PSTN interface and SIP channel. Asterisk supports unified communications by allowing you to link business communications into any business function or applications.
The solution follows both customary telephony protocols like FXO, FXS, Kewlstart, Loolstart, and E&M; and modern VoIP protocols such as IAX, Google Talk, UNIStim, SIP, SCCP, MGCP, and Jingle/XMPP. It’s also highly scalable and facilitates the integration of systems installed on different locations while supporting unified dailplans across multi-located offices.
