Apache Trafodion is an enterprise-class SQL-on-HBase solution and an open source which is targeted for operational workloads or big data transactional workloads. Project Trafodion runs in a full-functioned ANSI SQL language support which improve developer productivity and reuses existing SQL skills. Project Trafodion has JDBC/ODBC connectivity for Linux/Windows clients which promotes interoperability with existing tools and applications. Project Trafodion uses distributed ACID transaction protection across tables, rows and multiple statements which guarantee data consistency across multiple tables and rows. Project Trafodion improves performance for OLTP workloads with run-time and compile-time optimizations with Hadoop and Linux distribution as neutral. Project Trafodion also supports large data sets using a parallel-aware query optimizer which promotes ease in adding existing Hadoop infrastructure. Project Trafodion can be used in new or re-hosted existing operational applications to complex application programming, address scalability issues or prohibitive licensing costs and can also be used in existing HBase workloads enhanced through SQL with transactional data protection. Trafodion uses the HBase APIs to perform the typical SQL functions of query data, update, insert and delete with transactional protection. With its bulk load capability, Trafodion interfaces directly with HDFS for high-performance data loading. Trafodion uses a Distributed Transaction Manager (DTM) model where a DTM runs on every datanode and each DTM works with its peers in other datanodes to coordinate the two-phase to commit protocol. Trafodion is intended to be hosted on a commodity hardware with recommended reference architecture such as HP Reference Architecture for Hadoop or similar server configuration as a starting point for a new installation.
